I've been hearing about this FLOP Tulisa so much lately that I had to listen to her song. I kind of like it. It's a generic bop that I enjoy much in the same way I enjoy Ke$ha.

I think Louis is pretty cute. He just hardly ever gets to sing
And yes, you better get your life from the Female Boss aka Tulisa

I would say that's probably her greatest quality She can change so easily!

TSwizzle finally makes her appearance on the countdown! I adore this song. Starting with a simple guitar intro, the beat kicks in shortly after, and it makes the song electrifying. The energy is crazy! In the song, Taylor sings about the first days of a love that eventually went bad "in the usual ways." I wanna say the song is about Nick Jonas, since she states the relationship was a while back ("The story's got dust on every page"). The bridge of the song is really good: "Tonight I'm gonna dance for all that we've been through / But I don't wanna dance if I'm not dancing with you." Simple, but it's all good. I think Taylor & Jeff Bhasker make a really good team. Their other collab, "The Lucky One", isn't quite as good, but still decent. Speaking of Jeff Bhasker...

I love this song? Yeah, I love this song! I never thought it would be a hit, but I'm glad it found success. Since I don't listen to radio, I have to ask if this song had a radio edit? It doesn't seem very radio-friendly since it has an odd structure. The "woah-oh" hook grabs you pretty much immediately, and the song's personal lyrics add a lot of depth. My favorite lines come towards the end: "My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called 'love' / But when I look into my nephew's eyes, man you wouldn't believe / The most amazing things, that can come from some terrible lie." I just really, really love that thought. The big beats that Bhasker is known for really shine through and make this song addicting, just like with "Holy Ground".

The best flop of 2012! Seriously, how did this song not chart on the Hot 100? Like, not even the lower tier of the Hot 100? Puzzling! Cassie has had a pretty difficult music career; it seems as if nobody really wants to give her the time of day. This song is a total bop; the tribal beats can destroy your car's system if you're not careful and turn the song up too loud. The "la-la-la-la-la" hook that pops up in the second chorus is heavenly. "And we go, and we go-go-go-go" is also a great, hooky line. So many hooks!! Ugh. It's really not fair that this song flopped. Apparently there's some remix of this song that Pitchfork really liked. I've yet to listen to it, but if it's better than the original (which I don't think is possible), then I must give it a listen!

This is my most-listened song from Ellie's latest album, Halcyon. I knew Ellie would only get one spot in my Top 30, and I struggled with having to choose between "My Blood", "Hanging On", and "Figure 8". In the end though, I had to pick this one. The brostep on the chorus is so nice. I'm usually not into that style, but it works so well here. The bridge, which acts as the build up to the final chorus, is electrifying and really gets me pumped for the ending. The frequencies in the final chorus go a biT crazy and really set me off. Yeah, this song is pretty much all about the chorus. The verses are fine, but the chorus is what sets this song apart from the rest on Halcyon.
Thank you Katy for releasing your EP at the beginning of December! The opening track of the Danger EP is "Aaliyah", a collaboration with Jessie Ware which features production from Geeneus. Some people think this song is a dedication to the spirit of Aaliyah, the singer. The song is a modern-day dance version of "Jolene" by Dolly Parton; Katy and Jessie beg Aaliyah to stop stealing the DJ's attention at the club. "Aaliyah please, this is green envy / Why must you taunt me girl?" The song ends with the repetition of "Why can't he play a song for me?", showing that Aaliyah has won the battle for the DJ's heart. Jessie and Katy's voices go so well together, but I have to say that I think Kathleen gave the better performance. So hyped for her new album next year!
I said in the opening post that four artists would have two songs in the countdown. Rihanna is the first of those four. "Numb", the third track from Unapologetic, begins the Top 10. This song is so hypnotic. HYPNOTIZING. The repetition of "I'm going numb" is just so, so good. I reckon this song is about drug usage, explaining why Rihanna feels so numb. And the instrumental of this song adds to the numb feeling one has during their high. According to Wikipedia (LOL), this song has an "Egyptian flute riff" which I absolutely love. Next time I get drunk (tonight), I'm listening to this song on repeat. As Rihanna says, "I don't care; cain't tell me no-thang." This line makes a nice reference to the sample of Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothing"; "Let the champagne splash / Let that man get cash / Let that man get past." Since that's one of my favorite Kanye songs, I love the sample in this song. Eminem also has a good feature, but the star of this song is Rihanna!

Okay, if you live in America, then you heard these two songs on commercials every freaking day for several months. "Too Close" was featured in an Internet Explorer commercial, while "Sail" was used in a BMW ad. The commercials were the reasons I bought both songs on iTunes Both of these songs were released in 2011, but they became more culturally significant in 2012, so I count it! Now let's decide which one is better! I give my thoughts on both songs below:
"Too Close" - I like how Alex was able to use dubstep in a normal pop song without it being all crazy and brostep-ish. Very Katy B of him! The whole first verse is really just a buildup to the part we all want to hear: THAT CHORUS. "And it feels like I am just too close to love you / There's nothing I can really say." Excellent stuff! So brill, you so trill, baby everything legit. Everything about this song is so legit. The lack of a bridge is a minus, but the final chorus is an explosion of goodness, so I'll let it go. This song will be tough to follow...
"Sail" - Spooky intro with the piano. I like it. Boom, 20 seconds in we get something. "I blame it on my ADD, baby." Excellent line for the ADD generation! I really like the feel of this song, but I feel like the song doesn't go as far lyrically or musically as "Too Close." It remains sort of static throughout until the bridge. While "Too Close" has no bridge, this one has a simplistic "La-la-la-la" bridge. I guess simplistic is better since the instrumental is so busy. This will be a tough decision...
My Vote: "Too Close", but it was very, very close! These songs are evenly matched.
Tell me your thoughts & be sure to vote!

Too Close definitely, I've never been a fan of Sail.
I like all these songs (sans the Rihanna one). The drums on Holy Ground are great.

That's my favorite part, too! I think fun. undeservedly gets a lot of ****. "Some Nights" is fantastic.
Aaliyah, please! This is green envy. Absolutely love that one.
"Numb" didn't stick out to me upon first listen of Unapologetic, but I'll give it further consideration.
I find both "Too Close" and "Sail" to be excellent, but I'll give "Sail" the edge, since one of my dance groups did a piece to it last year. It was also on my best of 2011 list.
