Evolution happens over millions of years. The statement ''our ancestors were apes'' is totally not what evolution is about. Take giraffes for example. 150,000 years ago giraffes were like deers with short necks. But when the seasons became tough and hard etc, only the ones with SLIGHTLY longer necks survived. The ones with shorter necks died since they could not reach the higher trees, where the leaves were full. The short trees and bushes would not have had any leaves since it would have run out from other animals eating them. So that gene, of long necks is passed down the family. The ''deers'' with longer necks survived, whilst the deers with shorter necks died. So the gene of long necks is passed on. Slowly their necks will keep on growing over generations. Until the deer would have evolved into a giraffe over a very long period of time. You see a giraffe 120,000 years would have looked slightly different to a modern day giraffe. It doesn't happen over a few decades. it takes thousands if not millions of years. Do you get it?
