The thing about warning 'Pointless' posts, is that it doesn't prevent people from doing it in the future; usually they only do it because they're lost in the moment or forget to add some text.
It seems like you're handing out WPs with no beneficial outcome. If you're handing out the points because 'the post is pointless and doesn't need to be there' then wouldn't it make more sense to just delete the post and tidy up the thread?
