You work in fashion? How did you start? My parents refuse to to pay for college if my major was fashion related because its not a safe job market. I'll probably do fashion journalism or something.

I started off college as political science major, hated it, studied abroad and came back with a whole new mentality and sense of freedom. Luckily I was able to change my major at the beginning of my junior year without losing any credits. I became a communications major (concentration in public relations) and started interning in fashion for high end magazines, pr firms and French luxury brands.
You don't need to go to a fashion school or study a fashion related major. Your internships and experiences are what matter. If your parents are against fashion journalism, just study journalism and do your internships in fashion/fashion journalism. Although, I think that only benefits you if you study in a fashion capital like NYC/Paris/Milan/London - maybe Tokyo, Madrid, Miami (biblio), LA (biblio) where there are fashion companies or publications to work for.
Your parents are right though, it is a tough market. Journalism is already tough, fashion is even tougher. I graduated last year and I only work freelance even though my qualifications are great. It takes a time, most of the people I know take a while to find a full-time job in fashion, some just get lucky and are at a company at the right time.
Back on topic, I'm here for Gaga's rainbow wig.
