Adele was the true "it bitch" of 2011. Katy was second to her.
I've always considered her on a completely different level, but in any event Adele being the it girl of 2011 proves that you don't have to be a new artist.
This is how it goes for me:
2006: Nelly and Fergie
2007: Rihanna and Miley
2008: Katy and Gaga
2009: Gaga and Taylor
2010: Kesha and Gaga
2011: Adele and Katy
2012: Nicki and Carly
Gaga in 2008? I think she had her first hit in 2009

I'd replace Miley with Beyonce. Besides, he highest point was in 2009 with Party in the USA.

Adele was still new to the general public last year.
Adele in 2012:
#1 album of the year (back to back)
#1 song on hot 100 (SFTTR)
A superb top 20 hit ()
Swept the Grammys, becoming the 2nd artist ever to win all 4 major categories
Will soon dazzle us with the best Bond theme ever.
I dunno, I think Adele might still be ahead of Nicki/Carly
Edit: isn't she doing something for the Olympics as well?

I feel like Adele's relevance literally fell off the cliff. Her album will continue to sell because it's just such a monster smash that the oldies are going to have to catch up, and she might even get another boost from the Olympic Games, but she has just fallen off of the map lately. It's not cool to like her anymore, and she doesn't really have a devout fanbase.
How is not "cool" to like Adele? She's done releasing material and is on leave waiting on her new bundle of joy, so of course her relevance isn't like last year. It's not like she's releasing material and the public isn't biting.

2008 katy and gaga? hell no i discovered gaga in late 08 and nobody i knew her name, music, ect (inthe US), she was barely growing to explode later in 09.

She has in fact been very absent, but that's her own doing...it's not because she lost popularity or relevance. And it also doesn't erase what she has accomplished in the first 4-5 months of the year.
Do you think Nicki/Carly have done enough to pass her? Keeping in mind that it's the total accomplishments during the year that count and not who's big right now.

Basically, you don't sell 4M copies and have the best-selling album of 2012 having already sold over 5M copies and having the best-selling album of 2011 and be irrelevant. That doesn't make any sense.

Yep. Worse than the relevance argument is the "impact" one. 21 is just a big seller but didn't have much of an impact. Of course! Every album that sells +23M WW has no impact
I just realized I forgot to add that she also won 12 Billboard Awards in one night...also in 2012.

no 2007 was Beyonce and Rihanna and 2008 was Katy and Rihanna again
