It characterizes a "balling out" mentality where one lives life to the fullest because one only goes through life once. YOLO has been described as a movement. The movement has also penetrated mainstream culture as actor Zac Efron was noted getting a tattoo with the acronym. The Washington Post describes YOLO as "the newest acronym you'll love to hate.
It has permeated amongst youth culture. A high school prank in Chicago, Illinois involved high school students chanting "YOLO." Some people have grafittied YOLO on walls. It has become a popular Twitter hashtag. Some youth have said that it is their motto.
In a news article, the reporter compared the phrase YOLO to Yolo County California.
