Basically none of my family actually gives a ****. It's more of a American "holiday" even though it has no relation to them what so ever.

Why does anyone anywhere celebrate any holiday?
Because they want to.

It became a big holiday in the 1980's when beer companies started marketing it as a day to get drunk. Before that it spread naturally by Californians to the rest of the US.
