what are the implications to this? aside from her and not sony owning the masters, what does this do for her? curious
the songs can never be shelved, she can use/ do whatever she wants with them. Once her contract is over, she will be able to sell the songs without any involvement of the label/ shop them to a new label
I don't think so. It also says 'under exclusive license to Columbia Records', not 'distributed by Columbia Records'.
I think they have a partnership and this might be her last album under Columbia.
What does 'under exclusive license to Columbia Records' mean?
I always like to hear of artists gaining some control of their art but acquiring ownership of masters always poses a problem with some people, especially when you buy your back catalog with all the hits. The suits don't like that and they came after artists hard, especially black ones.

Also would mean that they'll have to approach her directly to cover, perform, remix, or use the song in media rather than the label approving without her consent (Summertime Sadness Cedric remix was done by the label, Madonna covering Born This Way on MDNA as long as Interscrope approves without needing Gaga's consent)
I'm pretty sure this was her last album with Columbia. She should be able to release independently through her label from now on. If you look on iTunes, it says the album is licensed to Columbia Records, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment.
