"Mr. Gurley died on Nov. 20, 2014, when his heart was pierced by a ricocheting bullet that Mr. Liang had fired while on a night patrol in a dark stairwell in the Louis H. Pink Houses in the East New York neighborhood.

It was at that point that Justice Chun announced that he was going to reduce the manslaughter verdict, saying there was no evidence that Mr. Liang was even aware of Mr. Gurley’s presence in the stairwell. “This was not an intentional act,” the judge said. “This was a criminally negligent act. As such, I find incarceration not necessary.”

The officer wasn't even aiming his gun at the victim, and was not trying to shoot him when he misfired, which is not uncommon. The bullet hit the wall and bounced off, unfortunately fatally hitting Mr. Gurley in the heart. The evidence is all there. He cannot be legally sentenced for manslaughter because of this. In the end, the officer obviously proved that he is not capable of protecting the lives of the innocent, especially Mr. Gurley, who is now dead because of this negligence.

When people do not receive the proper justice, karma has a way of working things out. I hope he is haunted with the blood on his hands forever.

So his gun magically fired itself into someone's heart. Interesting

this does seem more fair

1) he didn't try to kill anyone. the bullet ricocheted.

2) the white officers who STRANGLED a guy in broad daylight got NO punishment.

Will the guy family get compensated

Well if he did not meant to kill him then why would he be guilty? But he should not be a Cop anymore though since he should know how to control a gun.

This is just a sad situation but not ill intend.

Does that justify anything?

well, it does seem to say something when the Asian gets punishment and the white ones get nothing for a much more heinous crime

I still don't know how this happened.

Just like every cop should be rewarded for their good, every cop should be held accountable for their actions, negligence or wrongdoings.

The housing projects they were patrolling (the stairways to be precise) had terrible management and many lightbulbs were out

His weapon was drawn because it was a potentially dangerous situation + the projects in general are not exactly ecstatic about police officers.

idk about flashlight, but a flashlight wouldn't have been able to shine down the floor or two the bullet ricocheted down (i believe)

We don't truly know what happened at the scene of the crime and thus it's wrong to label one as "a much more heinous crime." See below.

the witnesses corroborated the story. It was really really dark and the ex-officer seemed to shoot out of fear from a sound or surprise noise and the bullet ricocheted off a wall.

He had his weapon drawn with safet off ready to kill no flashlight and he didnt intentionally shoot hmm ok

If you're walking up stairs in a dark hallway why arearen't yyelling to make yourself known. Unless they were hoping to catch someone in the act.

Shoot out of fear for negligence thats second degree manslaughter

Look, I'm not saying it's right.

I'm just saying that compared to Eric Garner's murder, this one is, by all accounts, accidental.

If Liang is to be punished, as he already has been, then Garner's murderers need to be brought to justice too. The fact that Liang is being punished at all while Garner's killers walk free is an injustice in and of itself
