During these visits to their parents, the children have to provide financial and spiritual support to them.

It's unclear how often children have to visit their parents.

Shanghai is not the first place in China to adopt this rule, as it already exists in both Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces

When children can sue their parents for neglect/abuse/etc then I think parents can do the same.

That's kinda messy. I can value both sides of the story, The elderly require emotional as well as financial support but their children are often too busy (working to visit/ can't afford the trip back home).

I can never quite understand how people can just abandon their parents though, like I get that you need to work and whatnot but

that's just cruel. They're your parents...

I can see most of youngsters rather enjoy living in the cities than go back to their hometown - the place they were born and raised up

I once heard a story of two college students talking to each other: They don't want to go back. They want to join some stupid unnecessary events (held by the student council) than pay their parents a visit during 3 months of summer

And that's not rare, those two girls are example of what's happening among students in my country. A bunch of ungrateful children tbh.

It would be bitter irony for the child of an abusive or neglective parent to be forced by law to keep them in their lives.

Oh its just in Shanghai, and the two other provinces? I asked my Chinese husband and he said that there is no such law in Heliongjang from he's from.
