Katy, Xtina Lobbying for Strict Copyright Laws on Youtube
Quote:
Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, deadmau5, and dozens of other musicians are asking the US government to revamp the Digital Millennium Copyright act (DMCA)
Musicians, managers, and "creators" from across the industry co-signed petitions sent to the US Copyright Office arguing that tech companies — think YouTube and Tumblr, sites with vast reserves of content that infringes on some copyright — have "grown and generated huge profits" on the backs of material that's illegally hosted.
"The growth and support of technology companies should not be at the expense of artists and songwriters," reads the letter signed by Aguilera, Perry, and their peers.

The deadline for initial comment on the matter is April 1, and the Copyright Office will host hearings in Palo Alto, California, and New York in May. While the office has no authority to change the law, it can issue a recommendation to a congressional subcommittee that has been conducting a broader review of copyright law since 2013.
“Section 512 of the DMCA has become the all-purpose shield that tech companies hide behind while they threaten the livelihood of music creators,” the artists wrote in one of the letters. “This outdated law forces us to stand by helplessly as billions of dollars in advertising is sold around illegal copies of our work.”
No shade, I love Xtina but why is she advocating for this?! Katy I understand but Xtina?? Sis...
She makes more money by sitting on The Voice chair and her last release (2012) made Hiroshima look small in comparison.
Not to mention the fact that all those artists are worth millions and millions of dollars...
Okay so if you're against it take your **** off of vevo and youtube and don't upload it there if you think they proffit of f of "ilegally hosted material". And then watch as your **** flops to hell and back without the help of youtube streams.
Wow truly inspirational, it's good that she fights for copyright law on youtube properly instead of tackily removing videos with her music like her peers.
Huge difference between her and other popstars tbh.
I don't entirely understand why? It's great exposure for songs - perhaps the fight should be to have these listens be reflected upon official charts worldwide. Even if they don't make money the same way a VEVO stream would, the increased chart position would make for a more lucrative career as the higher on the charts you are, the more execs and promoters want to hire you.
They do realize a majority of these third party sites are whats responsible for their success, correct?
It's a trade off. I personally only buy music from artists I love, but for artists I don't, I'll normally see them on tour/post about them on social media.
People don't watch TV/Listen to the radio/Buy CD's anymore. Artists need this platform to connect. Building a fanbase is crucial. Even if some aren't buying your music, you're getting the promotion which will lead to better return on investment anyways.
They're right to do this, though. Tumblr and Youtube are attaching ads and earning profit on illegally posted content, and non of the proceeds are going to the artists.
Again, this is not about VEVO or any official uploads to the artists' accounts. It's about third parties making a profit from illegal uploads while the artists don't see much of it despite being the ones making the actual investment!
