Selena talks Taylor, Bey, Zayn & more!
Quote:
You seem to have undergone a bit of a transformation recently?
"It’s taken me two years of struggle, with a lot of ups and downs to finally get to this place. I feel much more in control of my life and I feel stronger and more comfortable in who I am and what I want to do."
You have been body-shamed online, had a health scare, and been through a break up in the public eye. That must have been so challenging?
"I need to stop worrying about things I can’t control and and not let myself be affected by some of the negative things that have been written about me. I looked at artists liked Taylor (Swift) and Beyoncé who are so much more in command of everything they do. I’m so inspired by women who are confident enough to be themselves. That’s what I’m trying to do."
Do you follow the ‘What would Beyoncé do?’ mantra that we like to apply to our own lives?”
"She’s a very powerful woman who has so much energy and determination. She is one of the hardest-working artists in the business and has a beautiful sense of who she is and what she wants to accomplish."
Are you still keen to carry on with both acting and singing?
"I never stop. But that’s the way I like it, and it’s the only way I’m gong to be able to do both. I feel the need to keep pushing myself as hard as I can. I love music but I also feel a bit frustrated in that I would like to make more movies. This year I’m going to be spending most of my time touring and then afterwards I want to get back and devote more time into acting."
Do you still have to go to auditions?
"Yes. For my latest film [In Dubious Battle, due out later this year], I asked my manager to arrange for an audition and she told me that she was going to send me to meet the director without telling him that it would be me. I didn’t want any preconceptions about me to be an obstacle. I had two more auditions before I finally got the part. But I’m really proud that I did it because I was up against several other great actresses and I had to fight hard to get the role. That was so gratifying to me."
Let’s talk about your album, Revival. We’re addicted!
"I never worked harder on any album than I did on this one. I spent a year in the studio recording it and worked with amazing people like Charli XCX and A$AP [Rocky] who worked on [my single] Good For You. I had a whole new team with me and it’t been an important transition on so many levels. I think people will see that this album has so much more relevance to who I am as a young woman making her way in life like so many other women in their early twenties."
Why did you pose nude for you album cover?
"It’s a way of showing that I want to reveal myself and be as open as I can."
On The Heart Wants What It Wants?
"Yes. That song was important to me because I’m a young woman who is going to live her life and even when there are a million reasons to end something, there will always be times where you can’t help it. You will go through times that are painful and you’re going to make mistakes. I thought that the public perception of me was so wrong and that so much that was being said about me was very unfair and painful."
Does it feel like you’re looking back at a different person?
"I feel confident and in control now, I also feel I understand how to deal with the public side of my life and not let that affect me. Since I was a child, I’ve lived in the public eye, and I’ve had to figure out how to do that. Ultimately, I am 23 years old and fighting out for my life. I feel confident, I feel empowered, I’ in control. I’m evolving in a way that I feel really good about."
Describe your ideal man now.
"I want to be with someone who is sweet and reliable and who can express his love as much as in his actions as in his words. He has to be someone I can trust and who is going to respect me. And he has to be able to make me laugh!"
Do you ever disguise yourself when you go out in public?
"I’ve tried but it never seems to work. I think the disguise actually winds up drawing more attention to me. Also if I’m in a café, as soon as people hear my voice they know it’s me. So I’ve given up!"
