a girl friend of mine is dating someone who is currently jailed for DUI and has past arrests for petty crimes like a dozen or so (i searched online)... i dont know how to give her advice without overstepping

I mean if someone had like a shoplifting charge from 7 years ago and they were never in trouble with the law after that and seemed to clean up their act, why the **** not. holding someone's past against them when they no longer act like that is dumb

That's a difficult question. I am very empathetic of those who have gone through ****, as have I, but it could potentially open a Pandora's box to various problems in the future. I love mentoring people out of tough situations, giving them a guide when all else has given up on them. But relationships are a huge investment so that's playing your cards for something to go wrong.

It depends on the record. Violent crimes, sex offenses or crimes indicating dishonesty or questionable character -- theft, fraud etc. are an automatic no; any others would depend on circumstances and severity. Something like simple pot possession or something like driving with expired registration or insurance, ok whatever -- repeated drug possession or DUI charges would be a no.
