"Whether in your car, at a nightclub or on the beach, it was pretty much impossible to be anywhere this season and not get the urge to dance to, sing along with, or simply turn up the volume on several summer songs.
But which tunes were so infectious they actually managed to seep into your heads and take residence there without any sign of leaving?
Well, we don't know if any of these hits were music to your ears, but for us, they were definitely The Five Catchiest Songs of Summer 2010:
1.
"California Gurls" - Katy Perry: Let's just start by getting the obvious one out of the way. After all, this track deserves, no, demands to be on this list. Flirty and fun, this upbeat ditty is a summer song if there ever was one. The kind that will melt your popsicle even when spun in the dead of winter. And hey, it's got Snoop Dogg! Can't go wrong there.
2.
"Alejandro" - Lady Gaga: This lush track understandably drew comparisons to Madonna, ABBA and Ace of Base. But rather than feeling like some sort of rip-off of those artists, it comes across as more of an homage to them instead. Sure, much of it is familiar, but the genius is Gaga's ability to combine all those sounds so effectively.
3.
"Dynamite" - Taio Cruz: Thanks to this U.K. club sensation, our stereo got quite the workout this summer as we cranked up the bass levels big time. Maybe a little too Auto-Tune-y, but it never really gets in the way. When a song is this much fun, there's no point in sweatin' the small stuff.
4.
"I Like It" - Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull: We'll admit the first time—actually every time—we heard this, it kinda made our heads hurt. It's loud and frenetic, even with a soft sample of Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" thrown into the mix. But it also became incredibly addictive. So we found ourselves willing to put up with the pain...and a few more aspirin.
5.
"OMG" - Usher: With an assist from Will.i.am, the singer brought his smooth sound to a song that succeeds on two very different (and important) levels: it gets you in the mood to dance, while also getting you in the mood to, well, you know.
And now, we go from the catchiest to...
The Crappiest Song of Summer 2010:
"Your Love is My Drug" - Ke$ha: Just when the bleeding from our ears caused by Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" had subsided, along came this noisy concoction. Once again, we were bombarded with that signature nails-on-a-chalkboard sing-speaky style of hers with lyrics like "Hit my head against the walls." Our feeling exactly. "
