Well, obviously. But countries in the European Union have to meet certain criteria, And I'm saying this should be one of them.
All eyes on Germany, I believe. Once they fall in line then I think both the European Court of Human Rights and the EU Commission will set a continental standard like with anti-discrimination laws. Will be hard for others not to be pressured when all the big dogs have gone ahead.
The civil union precedent has already been set in Court (Italy ha impact) so in a few years marriage cases will be successful too.

I wholeheartedly support gay marriage but imposing it on countries just like that will not work and is a bad idea overall. I'm pretty sure that the only thing achieved would be conservative countries leaving the EU.
You still can't get married in Germany fix it Joachim
Still wonder why it's not in European law yet to allow gay marriage.
Our conservative party is still against it and we might get another conservative party next year and they're against gay marriage too Idk. We have three left parties and many people are Pro-Gay Marriage.

Didn't they join the EU because they were after some kind of benefits? Would they really risk losing all that because of one social issue?

There were multiple reasons for them to join the EU and Western cash was one out of many. Besides, forcing states to accept anything is far from the idea of the EU as a confederation of sovereign and democratic states.
