The straight white guys of Hollywood have struck again, casting British actor Charlie Hunnam in a biopic about notorious Mexican-American drug lord Edgar Valdez Villarreal, aka "La Barbie," and it's upsetting many people. Are there no Latino actors out there who could have played this role?
Hunnam, best known for his role as Jackson "Jax" Teller on Sons of Anarchy, will play the blue-eyed Texan güero who was once the leader of the Sinoloa Cartel-assocaited group "Los Negros," and was reportedly connected to the tragic death of Mexican singer Jenni Rivera.
And it would appear that Latino actors with similar "La Barbie" features, like Santiago Cabrera, James Roday, William Levy, or even Scream Queens's co-star Diego Boneta were never considered for the role. In addition, the recent film news further highlights many of the grievances expressed this month as a result of the #OscarsSoWhite and boycott controversies.
