A BuzzFeed Canada writer was harassed on Twitter Saturday after putting out a call for story pitches from non-white contributors.
Senior writer Scaachi Koul tweeted that the the site was looking for "Canada-centric" content, and "would particularly like to hear from you if you are not white and not male."
Koul said she wasn't going to ignore pitches from white male writers, but would be less interested in them.
"Giving ignored voices preferential treatment is not racism against white people ...it is an attempt to fix all of history," she tweeted.
But Koul's boss, Craig Silverman, came to her defence, saying the callout was not a job posting.
Koul then tweeted that she was receiving violent threats. She has since deleted her Twitter account.
Some journalists decried the backlash and praised Koul's work.

There's no excuse for the harassment she's receiving. That being said, her tweet was very poorly worded. As a senior writer, I think she should know better than to tweet something so divisive.
That being said, BuzzFeed is a huge attention *****. I'm sure this is a publicity stunt for them to write a think piece.
It was a stupid tweet. It came off as discriminatory but I think that they wanted to get this publicity, since that's the type of publication they are. They go OFF about every single micro aggression that a celebrity makes, acting all high and mighty, but then instead of simply saying "Women of Colour", they go out of their way to say this They're such a desperate joke.
She goes race/sexism trolling for attention with her original post. There are better ways to pitch non-white male writers... Not a bit surprise that others got so angry with complaints and responses. Some of them went to far... I guess But she is such a racist troll....
