Nominated for the Music Artist award are Frank Ocean, Year & Years, Sam Smith and Zayn Malik.
In the bio explaining Zayn’s nomination it states that in 2014, when asked about sexuality, he told his fans: “Just be yourself. If that’s who you are, that’s who you are and don’t be afraid to be the person that you are.”
Sarah Garrett, founder of the awards, explained to the BBC: “The British LGBT Awards are vital in highlighting those who have done good by the LGBT community and are also important in promoting LGBT acceptance.”
Also featured on the list for the music award are Adele, bisexual singer/songwriter Halsey, Little Mix and Jess Glynne.
Among the nominees in the Media Moment category is the declaration of marriage equality in the United States, same-sex marriage becoming legal in Ireland, contemporary espionage drama London Spy airing and the BBC sitcom Boy Meets Girl.
Rugby players Sam Stanley and Keegan Hirst have both been nominated for the Sports Personality award along with SKY Sports presenter Mark McAdam.
This year’s LGBT Broadcaster nominations include: Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw, RuPaul, Paul O’Grady, Claire Blading and Newsnight’s Evan Davis.
