Dear ATRL

In my art coursework, I have the option to do a project based on The Aztecs. However, while I am intrigued by the potential for creativity under this topic heading, I am worried as to whether it will result in me appropriating Aztec culture? My initial ideas for an artwork were to make some based on an amalgamation of different aspects of design, such as patterns like these maybe juxtaposed with something more modern.



I often see people complaining about cultural appropriation when people take elements from other cultures, so I don't really want to end up doing that if I get artistic influence from designs that I see in my research stage. What do you think I should do?

Although I am assuming you're joking, what you described would be closer to appreciation, as you're being inspired by a culture, not blatantly stealing from it with halfhearted interest.

This is a genuine question. Previously when I've been inspired by other cultures in my coursework I've just made artworks, but this is a more developed project for me than normal, and also I've been having a greater understanding of the way people view uses of cultural aspects.

I think that's a pretty great idea. It's more appreciating and trying to get an understanding of their artwork.
