ONE OF THE most popular smartphone manufacturers in the world is Xiaomi, a Chinese company whose devices draw frequent comparisons to the iPhone. Xiaomi’s phones are well-designed, affordable, and unavailable to the US market, at least until now.

PC Mag first reported that US Mobile, a third-tier carrier that piggybacks off of T-Mobile’s network, has begun selling three Xiaomi devices in its online marketplace, along with one from Chinese manufacturer Meizu. These are the same Xiaomi phones that have helped make the company the fifth-largest smartphone vendor worldwide, as measured by IDC. And that’s the problem.

While the Xiaomi Redmi 2, Mi 3, and Mi 4i are as attractive and budget-friendly here as they are abroad—the most expensive, the Mi 4i, costs $219 off-contract—they’re also the English-language versions of the exact devices that are sold in China. US Mobile is simply offering a storefront for an outfit called Omni Electronics HK to import them to the US. They’re not tied to US Mobile, either, explains Ahmed Khattak, the carrier’s founder and CEO. All US Mobile marketplace phones come unlocked, meaning you can use them with the carrier of your choosing, while US Mobile handles the warranty. In this case, that freedom of choice won’t help much; US and China use different 4G bands, meaning that these smartphones will be limited to 3G speeds.

Have any of you even used a Xiaomi phone? They USED to be garbage that broke down after a few months of use but they've improved and came a long way since then. This is GREAT news. With more of these companies entering USA, hopefully, the prices for "upper class" flagships won't be 1,000$ for much longer.
