Michael Caine: Black actors should be patient about Oscars
Quote:
Michael Caine said the awards should not become a box-ticking exercise. He told the Radio 4 Today programme: “There’s loads of black actors. In the end you can't vote for an actor because he's black. You can't say 'I'm going to vote for him, he's not very good, but he's black, I'll vote for him'.”
He continued: "You have to give a good performance and I'm sure people have. I saw Idris Elba (in Beasts Of No Nation).I thought he was wonderful.”
The double Academy Award-winner offered the advice to black actors to “be patient”. He added: “Of course it will come. It took me years to get an Oscar, years.”

I totally agree that you shouldn't just vote someone's performance Oscar-worthy based on skin color, but there were definitely viable performances in 2015.
As far as being patient, I think black people have waited long enough. Black people didn't pop out of nowhere 5 years ago, they've been disrespected from before he was even born.

His wife is South Asian (Indo-Guyanese) and a Muslim. The UK is bigoted towards South Asians, especially the Muslim ones. You would think he'd more sympathetic towards minority issues considering how "patient" British Asians are without any complaints, but still have low media exposure despite being the biggest minority group there.

I agree with him The same eventually will happen to my Latino/Hispanic people and Asians. It is a White industry that we are slowly and patiently trying to make it. No need to give awards based on skin color because of boycotts or threats.

Asians have been part of the UK population since the 19th century and the same has not eventually happened. Patience doesn't magically change things.

Well, when you have white men in ttheir 60's voting for these awards do you really think they are going for black movies? Of course not, they're going to see and vote for what the can relate too .

Why do people keep saying or even thinking black actors want to be nominated because they're black.
FOR YEARS the Academy has skipped over STELLAR minority performances, that is the issue.
Queen Latifah in Set It Off
Angela Bassett in Waiting To Exhale
Oprah in The Color Purple
I could go on.

And I'd say that goes for all the underrepresented minorities too, not just us. How long should poc have to wait to be respected and treated like all the white people?

I agree with Michael Caine. Everyone should be patient. If you were Idris and was nominated because you're black, how would you feel?
I thought Idris did an OK job in BONN. He was amazing in the first 5 minutes of his screentime in that movie, but as the movie went along it got tiring. I was waiting for some Forest Whitaker moment (Last King of Scotland), but there was none. Other than the accent, there was nothing that really stood out. His acting was not even nuanced or restrained.
Idris did get some precursor love, but not as much as Michael Shannon for 99 Homes. Why isn't anybody complaining about Shannon getting snubbed? Idris should get nominated, but not before Michael Shannon. Other than Idris, was there any other Black actor/actress who were worthy of being nominated?
And Beasts of No Nation, Creed, and Straight outta Compton were all fantastic movies. All 3 movies actually had higher RT scores than The Revenant, but a movie needs precursor support and not just critic love. All 3 movies trailed behind the 8 nominated films for Best picture. 'Carol', a film that was a clear frontrunner since the race began, was also snubbed. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', the biggest movie ever in the US with great critical support, was also snubbed. In terms of precursor statistics, SOC would be #10 or 11 on the list of BP contenders. Can they not acknowledge that this year was a competitive year for films? The academy does not vote just to have an obligatory Black person in the list. Plus, there are other minorities living in the US who happen to be having success in Hollywood. The last 2 winners of Best Director and cinematography were all Mexicans. Just sayin'
