Rampling : call to boycott Oscars is anti-white racism
Charlotte Rampling On Oscars Boycott: "Racist Against Whites"
Quote:
Invited on French radio Europe 1, British actress and Oscar-nominee Charlotte Rampling has weighed in on the controversy over the lack of diversity this year among Academy Award nominees, saying that filmmaker Spike Lee's call to boycott the ceremony was "racist against whites."
The 69-year-old English-born actress, famous for her movies in three languages (English, French and Italian) and nominated for Best Actress at the 88th Academy Awards for her role in Andrew Haigh's drama 45 Years, suggested that "maybe the black actors didn't deserve to make it to the last leg."
Speaking in French, she responded to a question about quotas: "Why classify people? Today we're living in a world where everyone is more or less accepted, but there'll always be problems like 'this one is less handsome, that one's too black, that one's too white' [...] So we'll always classify people in thousands of little minorities everywhere."
this isnt about white people? its black people not being recognised for their work? (or not being given work)
racism is institutional disadvantage, not saying mean things about white people. even then, who has said anything mean?
First paragraph annoys me; the second I agree with the fact that we should nominate the best performances period - regardless of race, sexual orientation, etc.; the third is in-and-out of okay.
This is why the lack of diversity is even worse in France. She's an amazing actress, but she's also being in the industry since the 60's and I doubt she faced discrimination like the POC. People like her are apart of the problem imo
It's not racist against white people but it's definitely correct that the most deserving ones should get to the last leg.
Of course, the Oscars aren't (always) all that reflective of the very best performances and movies of the year to begin with but someone should not get in solely based on his race just as much as this shouldn't be the reason (s)he'll be excluded.
There are only like two black people I would have given a nomination and then there's also the case of people completely omitting other races in this whole debate which bothers me.
