News: PLASTIC to outweigh FISH in the ocean by 2050

Oceans bear the brunt of the load, according to researchers.
Currently, about one garbage truck-sized load of plastics is dumped into the oceans each minute, researchers say. If no action is taken, that rate will double to two loads per minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050.
“In a business-as-usual scenario, the ocean is expected to contain one tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish by 2025, and by 2050, more plastics than fish (by weight),” the report’s authors write.
The study estimates that at least 150 million tonnes of plastics are floating in oceans today.
Researchers based their findings off interviews with more than 180 experts and analysis of more than 200 studies.

We have a plastic bag ban in our state. If we want a bag we have to pay 10-15 cents, and they're biodegradable.

Yeah, the way we currently consume things is not sustainable or environmentally friendly in the least. Phasing out plastic bags and bottles needs to go beyond the grocery store. There are so many upcycled material that we can utilize for packaging that can be reused or decomposed cleanly but companies do not want to spend money on reworking their infrastructure or the research. This book really sheds a lot of light on how much more we can be doing but we don't.

There's been a few times that I've shopped there without my cloth bags (just forgot to bring them). They put like 3 things in each bag. I didn't watch the first time and then my order had like 17 bags. Like, wtf.

I wish this was nationwide

When I'm at a store and I see people double bagging a single item I literally have to hold in my screams.

We get discounts for bringing in our own bags here, but you can still get plastic for no charge.
