Britney Spears Asked to Prom
Quote:
An Agawam teen is hoping to bring his favorite pop princess as a date to his high school prom this April.
David LeCours, 17, started a social media campaign December 27 to ask Britney Spears to prom. He said Spears's music helped him come out as gay to family and friends.
“I listen to [“Stronger”] any day I’m feeling down,” LeCours told Boston.com. “She’s talking to us fans, telling us it’s going to be OK.”
The invitation tweet—containing a photo collage and the message, “Hey Britney Spears, if I said I Wanna Go to prom 2016 with you, would you Hold It Against Me? #BSPromwithDL”—currently has 400 retweets.
LeCours said he has been a superfan since he was 2 years old. He’s seen Spears perform eight times and met her three times at her Las Vegas residency.
“She has this sparkle that other celebrities don’t have,” he said. “She really cares about her fans.”
LeCours said Spears cares so much that when he wrote the pop star a letter describing how her music helped him through dark times, she reached out.
“I wouldn’t be able to be openly gay and embrace myself like I do if it wasn’t for you teaching me not to give a cr-- about what people say,” LeCours wrote to Spears.
LeCours said he couldn’t believe Spears took the time to respond.
“When I opened the letter and saw, ‘Shine bright always, Britney Spears,’ I instantly balled my eyes out,” he said.
LeCours said he is hopeful the superstar will take the time to respond again.
“She’s a mom [ ], has a Vegas show, is working on a new album, so I don’t expect her to go—even if it would be great,” he said. “But I do hope she responds. It would mean the world to me.”
LeCours said in the meantime he will continue to enjoy junior year, and listen to the music that he said tells fans everything will be OK.
“For anyone going through hard times, don’t let other people kill your sparkle,” he said.
