I'm probably dumb for opening a thread like this on ATRL and hoping we can have a legitimate, respectful, intelligent discussion, but let me try-

I think a significant portion of people can agree SOME limits on respecting others' cultures are needed, but my question is where do you draw those limits? Why are they there? Do you have any? Etc.

Personally, my limit is when the culture involves harming another person or taking away your freedom. If there's a culture that promotes rape, for example, I owe no respect to (at the very least) that element of it and will 100% criticize it, as stuff like that is disrespecting, harming, abusing, and mistreating other individuals as well (and, in a sense, imposing that culture on others without their will). But if it just affects you, you do you.

How about the rest of ATRL?

The limits hard to draw. Take that Dutch tradition of dressing up as Zwarte in the netherlands during christmas time. Like, sure it has been tradition for quite a while. But like blackface...

But Europe has different types of race relations than the US (the US' history is important too). It's interesting to think about

Well, to me in terms of the cultural appropriation issue people just want to bitch about something.
Gwen Stefani dressing up in chola apparel for her Luxurious video is not offensive and I think its stupid if something that ineffectual offends anyone at all.
There are circumstances in which someone uses another culture in a way thats genuinely degrading. But everyone just calls appropriation for the sake of calling appropriation.

When a culture harms or hurts or treats someone less than human

i think people need to be more open to their cultures being criticized. being defensive about it doesn't really accomplish anything and there are some things people do in the name of culture that are legitimately morally wrong, and these things should never be justified. and if people think the opinions of outsiders on the culture are so meaningless then why do they even get offended by them?

With all due respect to certain religions, women are NOT subservient to you.

Certain religions are just so fundamentalist, and they are taught to wage war on against anyone that is not like them, or at least it seems that way.

The limit is hard to draw. It comes down to what different groups of people value and feel should be the highest law they live under, secular or religious.

When a culture promotes harming another human being, I draw the line.

Hence why I would ban all religions.

Rape is such an iffy subject tho, because even developed countries have high rates of rape that go unreported and unresolved. Even if the culture of the country itself doesn't promote active rape, pretty much every country has its own rape culture. Take the United States, for example. High rates of sexual assault, but a large amount of the American public would rather blame the victim than the perpetrator and many women are intimidated into not reporting such crimes. Not to mention that the raping of males is basically shoved under the rug in the U.S. as well.

The reality that is that no country is perfect, and the U.S., which many regard as a beacon to follow, has a lot of flaws similar to the countries we are trying to oppose. What's most important to me is not putting my country on a high horse, because I know there is just as much sexism, homophobia, and rape culture here as anywhere else. Obviously, I hold my own values, and I do judge other cultures based on my expectations, but I never pit my culture against another because there is no point. Less bad =/= best.

No modern testament promotes violence.

Basically. I don't agree with cultural relativism. At some point we have to objectively (ideally) decide whether one concept is morally right and whether others are morally wrong. Honor killings are another good example...Just because a foreign society or culture accepts certain behavior, doesn't make it "okay". It doesn't matter if it's not my culture, still wrong.

But it's kind of creating a costume out of a whole culture and embodying stereotypes about that culture. That's why it's offensive and that's when it's appropriation.
