Six years after it went off the air, ABC’s Lost is giving fans a whole new mystery.
Sharp-eyed viewers noticed the two-part closer of the hit series is roughly 18 minutes shorter on Netflix than the 104-minute version that aired in 2010, with numerous small cuts made. So if you’re watching the Lost finale on Netflix, you’re not seeing the whole story.
Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof says he was unaware of the Netflix presentation of the Lost finale until EW brought the matter to his attention. He’s not happy about it, and wants the mysteriously missing footage returned.
Lindelof gave this statement to EW: “I am totally befuddled by all this. Love it or hate it, the finale that aired is the definitive finale and to alter it in any way defies explanation. Something tells me that this isn’t Netflix’s fault … that it’s an honest mistake and something got miscommunicated — I seem to remember ABC had to make an edit for rerun airings that tightened the show into ‘format’ (42 minutes to accommodate commercials), and somehow that [version] mistakenly got sent to Netflix.
And before the idea of multiple Lost finale edits give you any ideas, Lindelof added: “I have no intention of ‘changing’ nor Special Editioning the finale … we continue to stand by it, but this is a fix that needs to happen, so at least people can love or hate it in its entirety. Also, Deckard is a replicant.”
We’re told that Netflix’s policy is that they only show the cut they receive from the rights-holder, but they’re looking into the matter. We’ve also reached out to ABC Studios, who are also investigating the matter. We’ll update this post as more becomes clear. Because that lost Lost finale footage … it has to go back!
Netflix issued a statement Thursday pledging to restore the ABC hit’s series finale after co-creator Damon Lindelof publicly backed fan outcry over a heavily edited version being streamed by the company.
It seems Netflix has heard our pleas and is telling fans to chill:
"We are in the middle of correcting now, and will have the uncut version back streaming as soon as possible."
The working suspicion is that Netflix received a version of the finale cut down for syndication.
Maybe I'll watch that show. I watched season 1 and 2 and then found 3 weird and I got lost (maybe that's the point ). It's a messy show that went on for like 3 seasons too long, but still.
Didn't everybody pretty much hate the finale anyway? I didn't watch Lost, but literally everyone I know who watched it said it was one of the worst endings ever.
They should be thanking Netflix for fixing it for them tbh
Wait. How long ago did they edit it? I only watched the finale for the first time maybe nine months ago. Did I not see the real version?
If you watched it as a 2-part episode you probably watched the butchered version. The finale originally aired as a 2.5-hour long episode (with commercial breaks) so it should be around 104 minutes long.

Nah, it's pretty evenly split between people who loved it and people who hated it, I think. Everyone I know loved the ending. I thought the version I saw (whichever one that was) was fine. Didn't really see why people were so divided on it.
Netflix usually receives syndication versions anyway don't they? Like all the SNLs that had their guest acts cut or times shortened, or how Queer as Folk had it's music cut out and replaced.
