Although Beyoncé has starred in movies before, including the award-winning Dreamgirls and opposite Mike Meyers in Goldmember, the “Single Ladies” singer is ready to be taken seriously as an actress. She reportedly hopes to tell the powerful story of Saartjie Baartman, who was sold into slavery to a Scottish man and later fought for her freedom in British courts. Baartman was forced to tour London freak sideshows under the show name Hottenot Venus, and tried suing her master, claiming she was not performing of her own free will.
According to the Mirror, Beyoncé has hired a team of acting coaches and experienced screenplay writers to help the singer bring her vision into reality. Although her past movies have been well-received, and Beyoncé is considered to be a talented actress, she wants to take on a serious role. Beyoncé plans to star in the movie herself, as Saartjie Baartman, although there’s been no word about who her co-stars might be.
A Beyoncé insider spoke to The Sun to reveal that “Beyonce is desperate to be taken seriously as an actress,” indicating her past roles have not satisfied the artist. Beyoncé “still feels her breakthrough role is yet to come,” and is hoping this movie will be it.
