James Rodriguez was involved in a 125mph police chase as he drove to Real Madrid's training session on Friday.
Police sources confirmed to the Spanish press that the Colombian was pursued by two officers in an unmarked vehicle after a 'serious breach of disobedience.'
Rodriguez was driving a black Audi R8 and was spotted overtaking a car at high speed down the left-hand lane of the M40 ring road in Madrid at around 4.45pm.
The player was not arrested but the officers cautioned him under the Public Safety Act and will notify prosecutors. They will decide whether the midfielder committed a road safety offence and whether further action will be taken.
In a police report into the incident, Rodriguez, 24, argued that he was running late for training and did not notice the police in pursuit because he was playing loud music.
I believe him ... I read about him thinking they're gonna kidnap him
