Hmm, I was just watching mah gurl Brandy on her new reality show and what bugged me was how desperate she seemed to reinvent herself so that she can to fit in or become successful again.

It seems like nowadays the main charts are filled with this pop or electropop sound that everyone is trying to do and when an artist isn't doing that and only performing well on other markets/charts they are considered a flop (even if they are an established artist).

So anyway my questions are...
- Should music artists reinvent themselves to get a hit/mainstream success? Why/Why not?
- Also, when some do reinvent themselves, why don't they get support?
- When do you think REAL r&b and hip-hop will **** on the main charts again like they use to in the 90's/early 00's?
- Does it matter if you're an established artist?

Honestly I think if a musician enjoys making music then they should just do it and be happy whether or not they have mainstream success, if they really loved making music they wouldn't try to reinvent themselves just to get that success.
and if some one likes the music then it shouldn't matter to them if the artist is massive mainstream or on the independent side of music
yes, the sales can be good sometimes but it's if you like the music or not that matters to me

I think everyone should change it up here and there, but when you have a fan base to obtain, you don't go overboard, you keep yourself recognizable. That's one of the reasons why Christina Aguilera has so much trouble, she's a brand new person every era and it's always a some watered down version of something someone has already done (minus "Back To Basics" era).

What do you mean by does it matter if you're an established artist?

I know Brandy loves making music simply for that purpose, but I also think she loves being in the spotlight as well. If she feels the need to reinvent herself to have a hit again, I say let her do it. She wants to have another hit, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

I'm sure everyone goes in the business for the sole purpose being their love of music. After a while you learn to love a lot more than just making music. Brandy wants to stay relevant. I don't think reinventing herself to mainstream music at the moment is going to help her. I honestly don't know what she can do besides try making a real soulful classic rnb album like Monica.

I don't think reinventing yourself is an artistic move.
I think artistry is more like a logical evolution than a shocking change of music/image direction.

But as Julesvel just said it, if someone want to reinvent himself to get a mainstream hit then he should go for it.
I won't consider it selling out unless they start making us believe during their promo how artistic their new music is...
