Jordin Sparks will join the cast of the Broadway musical “In the Heights” in August, once she wraps up her first-ever solo headlining tour.
“I’ve always wanted to do Broadway,” Sparks said from her home in Arizona. “Music has always been my No. 1 love, but I love Broadway because I can become a different character and combine music at the same time. The opportunity came up and I was ecstatic. I cannot wait to go, because it’s going to be a whole new experience for me.”
The Broadway schedule - eight shows a week with one day off - will continue the whirlwind pace she began on “Idol” and continued with her post-“Idol” career. In addition to recording two Top 10 albums,
Sparks has been the opening act on mammoth tours with Britney Spears, the Jonas Brothers and Alicia Keys.
Post-“In the Heights,” there won’t be much downtime, either.
Sparks said after a brief vacation, she’ll record her third album - direction and concept still undetermined.
“If I were to record an album now, everything would pretty much be a really happy, happy song,” she said. “Everything would be really happy and very exciting, which I think is good. I think people need to hear songs that are encouraging and happy and not all about being sad. But as far as my third record goes, when I do start working on it I want to evolve. I’ll be in a different place than I was when I recorded (2009’s) ‘Battlefield’.”
Clearly Sparks’ sunny disposition hasn’t been dampened by the stress of pop stardom.
She says music continues to be her go-to stress-release outlet. She’s also taken up boxing with her trainer, and figured out what’s worth paying attention to - and what isn’t.
“I’ve learned something about myself over the past year,” she said. “I tend to stress out about things that I can’t control. It kind of hit me within the past couple of months, with Broadway coming up and the tour and everything. I just felt a little bit overwhelmed. My friend was like, ‘Jordin, there’s nothing you can do about how fans react, or things that are going to happen in two weeks. You can’t worry about that.’ So I’m just learning to take things day-by-day. I get through today and then tomorrow’s a whole new day. When I think about it that way, pretty much all the time I wake up on the right side of the bed. I can start my day happy and I’ll be good, because it all depends on how I respond to things and how I react.”
