Katy talks on her fame, Teenage Dream, touring & third album
Quote:
Katy Perry is a realist when it comes to the pop world, recognising that her time in the spotlight might be limited.
Despite the success of her breakthrough 2008 album, One Of The Boys, she knows many artists don't replicate such an achievement with their follow-up.
"I never got into this for the fame," Perry tells Insider from her Los Angeles home.
"It's just like a by-product which you take for what it's worth and know that it's pretty fleeting and that people change their mind all the time.
"And that's why I feel like I have to work just as hard for this record."
She's talking about Teenage Dream, her new album, out in August. Perry is determined to make the most of her chart ride, saying she's not going to let the pressure of fame affect her in the same way it has some performers, such as Britney Spears.
"Things could come unhinged at any moment, but I pray I don't shave my head this record," she says in a swipe at Spears' very public meltdown as her career crumbled.
"I pray that everything goes along smashingly. I continue to take it one day at a time and remember what my motives are."
Perry is lying in bed as she chats to Insider about the new album.
"Hold on one second, I have a kitten clawing at my feet so I just have to take her and fling her across the room," she laughs.
"There's always a kitty cat in my eyesight. She's like having a child, she p***** in the bed and she's really adorable. She's, like, jumping all over my face at 3am, while, by the way, I have to get up at 4.30am."
It's nice to hear Perry has the same problems the rest of us do house-training a new pet.
She is refreshingly candid for someone with so much success.
She does, however, have a publicist listening in on our call, ready to jump in if Insider asks any too-personal or inappropriate questions.
"She's just making sure you don't ask me about my double-D boob size," Perry, 25, jokes.
She is clearly pumped about Teenage Dream, describing it as "an ice skating cotton candy fest".
She aims to prove she's no one-hit wonder off the back of One Of The Boys, which sold more than six million copies worldwide and made her an international star with hit singles including I Kissed A Girl and Hot N Cold.
"I've always felt like for the second record I'd have to be doing it with the same effort, going the distance like I did on the first record, just to re-solidify my place," says the singer-songwriter who is engaged to British comedian Russell Brand.
"And then when the world ends in 2012, I can take a break because we'll all be f****** dead and I'll be ready to sleep for a long time.
"It's like a snowball effect. It's like the whirlwind: everything that happens and continues to happen gets bigger and bigger."
Technically, Teenage Dream, is Perry's third album. Her first was a gospel rock release in 2001, under her birth name, Katy Hudson.
But that went virtually unnoticed, prompting her to reinvent herself as an edgy pop singer.
"I'd say this is probably my second record because the first was such a blip - maybe only even 1500 copies are out there in the world," she says very matter-of-factly.
Perry's single, California Gurls, made its debut on the iTunes charts in the US at number one.
In Australia, the song is getting heavy play on radio with Perry describing the track as "sexy without being trashy".
"I'm not saying the whole record is going to be a bunch of sugar," she says.
"I don't want to make people, like, diabetics or anything.
"I want to fill their complete appetite with the record, I think, as they dive in deeper - which kind of happened the same with One Of The Boys.
"You were fully satisfied; it wasn't all just sugary sweet."
California Gurls features guest vocals from Snoop Dogg and the idea for the track was inspired by Empire State Of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, which has become an unofficial anthem for New York.
"We were all in California and I just felt somebody has to represent for the west coast," Perry says.
"I have kind of always, in my own way, been paying homage to where I come from and I wanted that to be a very natural thing - my first single from the second record to be an involvement, not a complete disattachment of who I am."
Perry is still mixing the rest of the album, with details being kept a close secret. As with One Of The Boys, she worked on the new record with super producers Max Martin and Dr Luke.
"My favourite song on the record would have to be Firework, just because it's like the opus to the record," she says.
"I feel like it's exactly the defined message for where I am right now and what I want to be exuding to the people. It's the vibe I want to give out."
She describes another track on the album, Peacock, as being "like a guilty pleasure; like a cheerleading thunderstorm of a song".
"Every cheerleading team could possibly make a routine to it," she says, "but it's also like the biggest innuendo on the record - 'let me see your peacock' - which is hilarious. We're talking about a bird here of course."
Despite the pressure hanging over her, Perry's future looks bright.
As well as Teenage Dream, she's about to make her Hollywood film debut, recording the voice of Smurfette in the big-budget animation feature The Smurfs.
A world tour is also planned, but not until next year.
"I thought my (last) tour was pretty cute," she says, "but I think we'll take it less cute ... less like Betty Boop and Shirley Temple and more like a futuristic Betty Page pop art.
"Not like underwear and garters at every corner, but, who knows, maybe I will show you my garter this time."
Despite Teenage Dream being three months from hitting stores, Perry already has her next album in her head.
"For the next one I want to do an acoustic record to mirror the unplugged record - but with all-new material and pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen."
To that, Perry's publicist chimes in: "Oh dear."
Perry knows she's been caught out.
But perhaps it's deliberate, because you can almost hear her thinking her way through the possible headlines resulting from the one-liner that she's just dropped.
Either way, it's a refreshing approach to media compared with the more controlled interviews other pop stars give.
"I think this record could last me a good two years and I'll be 28 by then so maybe I'll start getting risky with it," she says, adding her biggest threat to label executives and management is deliberately falling pregnant.
"I do tell them, 'If you continue to push me harder, if you push me to the end, I'll get pregnant. I'll pull that card on you, so don't p*** me off. I do have the power to have unprotected sex'."
Katy Perry's single, California Gurls, featuring Snoop Dogg, is available now. Her album, Teenage Dream, is in stores August 27.

For real, Teenage Dream is her second album.
Most songs from "Ur So Gay" were included in "One Of The Boys" and do you really wanna count her gospel release?
I can't wait for her new album, damn, is too far!

She counts so,
Anyways, I don't think there will be a 2nd single before the album. "California Gurls" will still be smashing sales-wise and I think at this point it's going to break some more airplay records.
"Peacock" sounds like it'll be extremely fun, "IUSA" style. Can't wait.

I wish the album were coming in July. My summer, and those of many of her other fans, will already be over by the time it's released.

I never had much like for Katy, but something about her lately is making me think twice. She just has this really sexy appeal about herself.

I hate the way this article makes it sound like she was insulting Britney.
Anyways, two years?! Wow she really wants to establish herself this time around. GaGa showed her how it's done. I hope this record is full of viable singles. I think she's lying about not wanting fame though--she wouldn't be recording with Max Martin if that was true.
