The TV show and books are supposedly steering off in two different directions because George R.R. Martin has not completed the series in a timely manner. HBO is creating the seasons faster than Martin can push out the books. I'm assuming it's going to borrow from the books in some way.
If there are two different endings to the series, I'm not expecting them to be too different, though.
