probably internet nerds looking to gain followers? i think the trend originally started with someone just testing a bot on twitter to see if it worked and people thought it was a real person.
some of these accounts gain so many followers the owners eventually sell them lol.
Twitter bot that was initially created as a spam account to promote some obscure Russian book store by posting weird excerpts of their books out of context, most of which were garbled nonsense. It got a huge following because occasionally the tweets would be unintentionally funny or seemingly profound.
Somewhere along the line though someone bought out the account and started posting intentionally funny things while still pretending to be the bot. It was revealed awhile later and kind of killed the buzz. They've since stopped updating the account.
