Planets with the same ecology as Earth don't guarantee there'll be life, but they greatly improve the chances.
Likewise, there could be life on non-Earth-like planets, or even moons or asteroids. Even in our own solar system it's feasibly possible we could find life or fossils on Mars, or on the moons of Jupiter or Saturn (some of the moons have water under the surface, and in recent years scientists have discovered that life can occur without access to sunlight, so those are possibilities).
