I want to start off by saying that I do believe there is a time and a place for catchy bops; but, should that be all that pop stars bring? Escapism is important, at certain times, in life: People need to escape, occasionally, from the everyday stress, fears, and just the tough reality of life just to survive. Songs about popping bottles, being young forever, dancing with your hands up and living a lavish lifestyle create that great escape many ppl need, but should that be all a pop act should be based around? Frivolous and fleeting feelings? The best songs that stand the test of time arise from artists narrating their challenges that are relatable on a global level. Facing the issues that plague us, head on, instead of running from them, and believing a fantasy that isn't obtainable to many ppl is what we should do to overcome them. Below is Helly Luv, an Iraqi Pop Artist, whose latest effort deals with her country's war with ISIS. She has appeared on various news networks talking openly of what she has seen and how she still has hope people will come together, for this cause, and help each other in defeating this enemy. So, should pop stars be more politically active? Unfortunately, or fortunately, these pop gods have a platform that can reach millions of people should these ppl follow in the steps of various rock and rap artists in speaking out about various issues in today's society.
Yes, my fave has been doing it since the beginning of her career & hasn't shied away from doing so through her music (she has songs about war, crime, abortion, religion, politics, etc), on her tours (she's openly criticized wars, world leaders, etc.) & through her philanthropic/political work (she's protested against Arizona laws against immigrants, she's always fought for socio-economic class equality, access to early childhood education, etc). Pop stars should be able to express whatever they feel they want to...it's sad that most of them don't speak on important issues for fear of damaging their brand/image.
Pop stars should be political to an extent. They have so much power and influence. If I were a pop star I would try to use my fame and power to make this a better world.
I don't really believe artists have any responsibility to society, art can be made for art's sake alone. If someone's interested and informed enough to make a record about politics, good.
