27 Oct - Mainland singer Jane Zhang made headlines recently for refusing to participate and accept the MTV EMA’s award for Best Asian Act.
As reported on Mingpao News, the singer, who flew to Milan to accept the award, revealed that she was told to pick up the award backstage instead of appearing on stage like the other Western celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, since “not all of the artistes from the other regions had come”.
As a result, Jane decided not to accept the award, citing “feeling disrespected and discriminated against” as the reason.
In a statement issued later, the singer stated, “With the unfair and discriminatory treatment shown to us, we decided to formally withdraw from the MTV Europe Music Awards.”
She's right but it also must be remembered that these are the EMAs. A singer with no actual relevance in Europe won't be asked to accept an award on stage.
