The Swiss public may have to vote on gay marriage several times in the future.
The Christian Democratic People's Party submitted a proposal amending the Federal Constitution to include only a heterosexual definition of marriage (between a man and a woman) and also a tax break for all couples. Many criticized this as a trojan horse initiative since the party is playing up the tax benefits part but not talking much about the definition of marriage their plan has.
The Christian Party's definition would effectively ban gay marriage and their idea will be voted on by citizens on February 28.
Quote:
The referendum text - "marriage penalty" means married couples paying more in taxes which is currently the law:
Marriage is the stable long-term and statutory cohabitation of a man and a woman. It constitutes a tax point of an economic community. It must not be disadvantaged in comparison to other lifestyles, especially not regarding taxes and social security.

Here are the LGBT groups explanation on what will happen if the CDPP's proposal passes:
Quote:
On 28 February 2016, Switzerland votes on the Christian People’s Party initiative “For marriage and family – against the penalty of marriage”. This would abolish the penalty of marriage, which would benefit only 80.000 couples. Furthermore it would define marriage as the “bond of man and woman” into the Federal Constitution, which excludes same-sex couples from marriage: a discrimination of about 500.000 gay people in Switzerland. Were the initiative adopted, the legislature has no possibility to open marriage to same-sex couples without a further constitutional amendment. My plea to you: say NO to discrimination and unequal treatment and vote NO. Thank you very much. Kind regards

My prediction: Polls show over 60% in favor of gay marriage so I predict the ban to flop and the other initiative to LEGALIZE gay marriage to pass sometime in the future.
Best of luck, my Swiss friends
