The Swiss public may have to vote on gay marriage several times in the future.

The Christian Democratic People's Party submitted a proposal amending the Federal Constitution to include only a heterosexual definition of marriage (between a man and a woman) and also a tax break for all couples. Many criticized this as a trojan horse initiative since the party is playing up the tax benefits part but not talking much about the definition of marriage their plan has.

The Christian Party's definition would effectively ban gay marriage and their idea will be voted on by citizens on February 28.

My prediction: Polls show over 60% in favor of gay marriage so I predict the ban to flop and the other initiative to LEGALIZE gay marriage to pass sometime in the future.

The side that wants the ban made the initiative delete many legal differences between civil unions and marriage, but restrict marriage to heterosexuals. They will be sneaky and only talk about the tax breaks for example and focus less on the actual banning part I hope people see through their plan.

Most other parties have urged the public to vote NO. Even the youth wing of the group who introduced the initiative is telling everyone to vote against it claiming that a marriage ban goes too far. Two months to go.

Moving Forward Together has become a slogan for LGBT who want a NO vote

In order for the referendum's question to be successful, a double majority is required: most of the country has to say YES and more than 13 of the country's 26 regions (cantons) have to also be in favor.

Moving Forward Together started a mailing campaign to tell people that this initiative would only benefit 80,000 couples but it would add a marriage ban that could affect as many as 500,000 Swiss.

How sneaky of them to throw it in a tax break referendum. Hopefully Swiss couples aren't selfish.
