I've read many articles by somewhat notable publications talking about the split in votes that stopped it from even being nominated.

Even if it was nominated, most sane predictions had 21 as the frontrunner for everything it was nominated in.

It made absolutely no sense for it not to even get a nom. But the committee is filled with old men who think rap or urban in general is only "cool" and can't convey a message hence why only two acts (Lauryn and Outkast) have won AOTY with a rap album and the last being won more than a decade ago.
