It was 4 a.m., and though my Fireteam should have stepped away from Destiny: The Taken King's fantastic endgame raid hours ago, the six-player assault kept us awake to try and stomp our way to the final boss. But a challenging co-op gauntlet isn't the only thing fueling our lust for better loot drops and great shooting – there are plenty of changes, big and small, that make Destiny a much better game. The short-but-sweet campaign, menacing Taken enemies, clever bosses, and rewarding loot system, combined with another inventive raid, have made these late-night play sessions a regular thing. This expansion is the shot in the arm that Destiny needed.

I’ve had a lot of trepidation with reviewing The Taken King. I don’t feel that it can be fairly reviewed as a DLC, because unlike traditional DLC, it fundamentally changes the base game of Destiny at its very core. On the other side of the (strange) coin, Destiny: The Taken King cannot be reviewed as an entirely new game due to its evolution and foundation that was set up throughout the last year. Destiny: The Taken King is an evolution of Destiny’s year one problems and Bungie’s answers on how to fix them. You could argue that this is how the game should have always been, but you can’t have a Charizard without first going through Charmander and Charmeleon… and that’s how I worked Pokemon into a Destiny review, ladies and gentlemen!

For those who had extremely lofty (and possibly unfair) expectations in the beginning, however, I think The Taken King finally completes the package and offers the experience many were expecting from the start. I’ve been playing Destiny for 12 months, so The Taken King’s abundance of content has been a welcome, but not too overwhelming addition to the game. For folks who have waited until now to dive in, I can’t help but wonder what they will think of everything Bungie’s shooter has to offer. I suspect that it’ll be a bit overwhelming at this point.
