The night before Camper is to set off into the desert where a bottle of water will be
his only available drink, Poisoner puts a fatal poison into Camper’s bottle. Early the
next morning, Spiller maliciously empties the bottle, in complete ignorance of what
Poisoner had done the night before. Camper then sets off into the desert, in all
innocence, and dies of thirst. Who caused Camper’s death? Explain your answer.
a question from the admission exam from oxford university. what's your interpretation?
No, conscription should not be legalised. Legalising conscription is essentially taking away your freedom. It seems ironic that you'd then go to fight for freedom after having yours taken away. Yes, it worked back then but the world is a much different place now. Besides, who would keep us up to date with pop culture if we were all away fighting?
Spiller is responsible for his death, as it is the most direct. He never actually drank poison so there is no way Poisoner is responsible. Lots of people say that Camper is responsible for not checking, i kind of agreebut the. Camper was silly for not checking his water, but by no means does that mean he is entirely responsible. It is an indirect responsibility for his death, but the most direct is certainly the spillage of the water.
Poisoner and Spiller are both guilty of attempted murder. I can only assume emptying a mans bottle of water in this situation, without informing him, was a deliberate attempt to kill him.
Spiller must consider himself successful.
I agree with others that Camper should have double checked his supplies before leaving and is responsible. Spiller is still more responsible for not informing Camper.
