Janet ever was?

I remember reading a thread on another music forum a couple years ago when this same question was asked. And even the most hardcore Beyonce haters had to admit that she is more popular internationally than Janet was in her prime.

I was wondering how you guys feel about this? I can't answer because I'm not really a fan of either and I've never followed their overseas popularity.

It seems like Beyoncé has become HUGE world-wide recently, even if her music is R&B influenced, she's been able to conquer other markets who most of the time don't pay attention to urban artists.

I don't think it matters. The only stans who place a huge emphasis on their Fave's being global tend to stan for artists who can't even sell albums.

Whitney Houston was the biggest female artist WW at her peak regardless of race, even before her Diana Ross was a global superstar.

Not only this but Whitney was the first black female to gain heavy airplay on MTV and the second black person to do it after MJ, and after than came Janet, Mariah, TLC etc. If anyone is the black female standard it's her and I don't think anyone will take that crown away tbh.

Beyoncé is indeed more popular overseas than Janet ever was but it doesn't take anything from Janet's massive success

Janet was popular outside of the US. I don't know why ATRL insists on calling her local. The stats don't lie. Sure, she was bigger in the US than she was outside of it, but she was extremely successful and popular across Europe and Oceania during her prime.

Beyonce is HUGE and on her way to becoming a living legend. But by saying she created a new standard, you're ignoring Whitney, Mariah, Janet and many others.

Janet was huge outside the states, but you're comparing the 90s with the 2000s. It's not the same world it was. Everyone is global nowadays.
