It translates to more than 80K a year. How much do you make? Keep in mind that those are not the typical salaries at private universities (they tend to be higher and increase as the individual progresses on their tenure track). Also, the usual load for a tenured professor involves working only eight months of the year (teaching either a 2/3 or 2/2 --as in 2 classes in the fall and two in winter or two of them each term; higher loads exist, but that's up to the individual and their need to publish). Those who choose to teach summer courses get paid extra.

Last, I fail to see how investing an additional five or six years (depending on your discipline) equals "studying their whole lives."

I guess working retail is easier and more financially satisfying?

why would anyone want to be a professor?

basically your performance is evaluated by the number of papers you publish which is basically non-sense. you can falsify or plagiarize it and it might not even be useful to anyone but still it's the only way they measure your expertise. it's full of ********.

I think this career is for losers and weak ass bitches who can't cope with the real world. basically the PhD students are slaves. You are forced to work 15hrs a week and you get paid worse than mcdonald's employees.

Oh well, it's a cycle. those enslaved phd grads will be professors and they think it's okay to be underpaid. their reasoning? they are changing the world and they are better than everyone else. delusional mess

Of course i did not quit I finished it after a lot of troubles but after that wasn't offered anything in academia, then found a job and then was suggested to apply for a postdoc for less than what I was making so I said no...
