Why do you go through the extra effort of putting a space before the application of a question mark?

I see this done a lot, particularly on forums. Why do people do this?

It takes very minimal effort to put an extra space ?
This is how I prefer writing it ?

Who did that? Maybe it was the rule in their mother-tongue language
