(CNN) -- A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Baja California in northwestern Mexico on Sunday, shaking the ground at least as far away as Los Angeles, California, the U.S. Geological Survey and witnesses reported.

The quake struck at 3:40 p.m. PT and was centered about 175 kilometers (110 miles) east-southeast of Tijuana, according to the USGS.

Chandeliers swung and water sloshed around in swimming pools in the Los Angeles suburbs, witnesses reported, while posters to Twitter reported feeling the quake in Phoenix, Arizona.

We MUST be going through some sort of phase of Geological changes or SOMETHING, because there are a lot of strong Earthquakes that are occuring.

3rd strong earthquake in the american continent this year, and we're just starting April. I feel so afraid of what could happen. I live close from a volcanic zone.

Technically California, Chile, and the Caribbean are all on totally different plates (continents).
The California and Chile ones happen because their plates are basically eating up the plates that sit right next to them, so earthquakes there aren't abnormal or a sign of impending doom.

Damn this is getting scary.

I don't remember so many strong quakes happening in less than 3 months before.

Upgraded to a 7.2 magnitude.

I'm so scared since my area is in always danger of devastating Earthquakes..

Strong earthquakes happen a lot (relative to the age of the earth), and in the billions of years of plate movement you better believe that strong earthquakes have occurred within a short time frame many times before. And it's going to continue for a long time to come, because the earth's plates will always be moving and as the Earth's geography changes, earthquakes will accompany that.

The fact that many poorer countries aren't well equipped to deal with earthquakes just accentuates the problem, especially in cities with poorer quality construction that don't have safeguards against earthquakes like many western cities do.

Making sense isn't quite as popular as panicking here on ATRL. I still appreciate it though so I quote you for actually making a reasonable explanation.

That's whay everybody panicked when the earthquake on Haiti happened, but almost never panic when an eartquake happens in Japan or Korea, cuz they rebuild everything in a matter of days.

If we are talking about magnitudes, i bet in asia the eartquakes are as strong as in america, and i was agreeing with him because what he said about panicking and problems
