People tend to watch TV more on streams than ever. Streams are up 55% on last year, and they will continue to grow next year. Obviously this alone will eat into TV ratings, as people who won't watch the show live if they are streaming it online.
This changing viewer behaviour does make it more difficult to compare directly with previous years ratings though. MTV really need to stream it internationally and/or make VODS available globally. Same with other TV Award shows. I really don't understand why the CMAs don't do this when they are trying to export Country Music outside the USA. Seems like a no-brainer to me, but maybe they have contractual issues with sponsors or US TV Networks.
