Sue’s Day Care in Durant, Oklahoma is under investigation by the Bryan County Sherriff’s Office for allegedly drugging children with Benadryl so they would sleep.
Officials became aware of the issue when a former employee contacted the Department of Human Services about children at the daycare being given Benadryl to make them sleep. Investigators State that they found an unmarked bottle of Benadryl inside of the day care.
Leslee Meade says that her 8-month-old would come home from the day care extremely tired every day, reports WHOTV. “Then after he’d eat, he’d go to sleep, say 6 o’clock, and wouldn’t wake up until 6 the next morning,” Meade said.
Meade adds that she was considering taking him to the emergency room.
Benadryl should not be given to infants unless ordered by a doctor. The drug can cause infants to stop breathing. Benadryl, which is also sold under the generic name of Diphenhydramine, is used as both an antihistamine and a sleep aid in older children and adults.
