No, he specifically said the flag has become a symbol of racism and pointed out that the KKK has turned it "into their deal," which is far from the truth. It's been a symbol of racism since its creation. His mentioning the flag in his upbringing is just to point out his familiarity with it.

He's not negating the flag's history. He's saying that now the majority views it for its racial leanings as opposed to the symbol of Southern Pride that it was once touted as. All of that is objectively true.

From the quotes it's more than obvious that he's not even aware of the flag's history and only aware of it as a symbol of southern pride through his own experience hence the "it's become..." and "the KKK turning it" as if it's a recent change. The truth, which he and a lot of people aren't aware of, is that it's always been a symbol of racism.

i honestly feel like Southern education teaches something completely different in their schooling system than the North

Many people in the south or anywhere that flag is flown don't know a thing about its history and see it as a cultural symbol of their defeat.

Blame it on bad education on the Civil War, willful ignorance and so on.
