The problem with this is that innocent people are convicted all the time. We always hear stories of people narrowly escaping death row after appealing over and over (sometimes for DECADES) for murders they didn't commit. The question is probably different if we could "play God" (ie: be omniscient), be 100% certain someone committed a violent crime, and then punish them accordingly. But the criminal justice system is flawed (often by prosecutors who don't care about guilt/innocence, just about getting a conviction), so to support the death penalty means supporting the possibility of completely innocent people being executed, and with your own tax dollars, no less
