Well, if we're being technical, a legend is a person who is the center of a nonhistorical or unverifiable story handed down by tradition from earlier times and popularly accepted as historical.

What new have they brought to the game, have they made any signficant change to not only the music industry but society in general. How many artists that come after have called them an influence. Does their music stretch across all demographics race, gender, sexuality. Are they regarded as the best in what they do or of them all. It's one thing to be one of the most celebrated and appreciated in one genre but what about overall.

Does their music have longevity. If you were to walk up to a random kid on the street would they be able to name at least 5 songs from them, or an album would they be able to. Do their albums often re-enter the charts. Are they good catalouge sellers. Are they known for any iconic pieces of clothing or other memorabillia. Are there any tributes and/or tribute acts dedicated to them like Elvis and MJ impersonators. Are they often referenced in other songs, are they sampled a lot, how many movies/tv shows have their songs been featured in.

IMO all of these questions matter even more than the sales and charts.

Jk, okay the only real legend in my sig is Madonna. I think you have to have been in the game for at LEAST 20 years to be a legend. And have ongoing, phenomenal success, including controversy, star power, global impact and a strong personality. Madonna is a legend particularly for her impact on feminism, gay rights and pop culture.

Someone who is influential, well known, and acclaimed. I don't think you necessarily have to be global in order to be considered one. For instance, Hank Williams, Sr. wasn't a global phenomenon.

Having a strong personality and controversy have nothing to do with being a legend. Stevie Wonder has never had any major controversy and he's a bigger legend than most of the people talked about on here. Personality also has nothing to do with it either. Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson have all been known to be extremely humble and they are all legends.
