Celeb News: Italian homophobes trash Mika poster

After a fan sent him a photo of the posters, he turned it into his Twitter profile and background pictures.

The images show banners advertising Mika’s September 30 show at Nelson Mandela Arena, with the Italian for “******” sprayed across the front.

The singer tweeted the photo, writing in Italian, “I saw the writing on my posters and my instinct was to let it go … that the hatred of some people, something I know very well , was best ignored.”

But, he added, “I am not afraid of Those Who discriminated against. No one Should be. Love does what it wants.”

The tweet—which features the hashtag “#rompiamoilsilenzio”, or “let’s break the silence”—has been retweeted more than 15,000 times.

“It’s a testament to popular desire for change and progress. This is about far more than me, my defaced posters,” he said. “This is about everyone. Looking away is a luxury. Some people have nowhere to turn in the face of intolerance. I am amazed and inspired by these events.”

After word of the graffiti hit news outlets, the poster was removed and mayor of Florence Dario Nardella issued an apology.

Ironically, several people who have shared photos of the poster—including its creator, artist Carlo William Rossi—have been banned for Facebook.

The reason? The anti-gay slur in the photo.
